Historic facts about Spirulina

What is spirulina? Spirulina (Spirulina platensis) is an unicellular microalga, the first photosynthetic form of life on Earth, created by Nature 3.5 billion years ago. It has millions of years of evolutionary wisdom encoded in its DNA.

Spirulina is a very ancient organism; it even doesn’t have a nucleus in its cells. Thousands of years of severe competition in the struggle for life made spirulina able to survive under extremely adverse conditions. Thus, spirulina cells contain the entire range of substances necessary for survival.

Spirulina is a real living fossil, whose composition remained unique and intact for hundreds of thousands of years.

There is a lot of historical references to spirulina. At various times travelers and scientists were finding evidence of African tribes eating cakes of Spirulina platensis green algae as their main food. Furthermore, it was indicated that the aborigines were healthy, active, hardy and plentiful, their health was to be envied; many of them reached a great age keeping virtually healthy! All of them had healthy, beautiful teeth and thick hair.

The Aztecs, people of an ancient highly developed civilization who lived on the lakeside of Texcoco Lake near Mexico, also consumed spirulina. For them it is known to be an excellent recipe for improving endurance. According to some scientists, it is the regular use of spirulina that explains a high viability of these people, who built cities and temples, who have reached incredible (by those historical standards) acme of skills in science, culture and art.

Even the famous navigator James Cook faced the "green bread" when he arrived to the coast of Africa. He noticed that local aborigines were surprisingly strong people with excellent eyesight and they were capable of traveling long distances while hunting, refreshing themselves only with green cakes. Later on, that ‘flour’ for baking ‘green bread’ turned out to be the spirulina alga.

Ancient Egyptian priests and pharaohs considered green cakes as sacred food.

Интересные факты о спирулине

Since early 80s of 20th century spirulina started its triumphal march around the world. Finally, the Spirulina platensis green alga with its unique biocomposition and viability attracted the world scientists’ attention and became a real treasure of modernity.

Nowadays, in many countries spirulina is used as an environmentally friendly product of healthy nutrition and a supplement to enrich diets with proteins and vitamins. Adding spirulina to a diet promotes metabolism normalization, body weight stabilization, improves body viability, resistance, mental and physical performance. The UN includes spirulina in the list of most valuable nutrient sources in the world and recommends adding this alga to the daily ration of adults and children.

Chemical composition of spirulina made it an essential product for normalization of physiological functions.

A method of body purification using spirulina was developed by American scientists. It involves complete starvation and taking a dose of spirulina 3-4 times a day during 1.5-2 months. It results in a body cleansing, as well as supplementation with necessary biologically active substances.

The beneficial effect of taking spirulina for the diabetes treatment was proven by clinical studies. Patients under spirulina treatment noted a rapid decrease of blood sugar levels. Constant usage of microalga can help decrease the insulin dose by half, or even stop taking it at all!

World oncology institutes are working upon reducing the incidence of all kinds of cancers using this microalga. Spirulina antitumor properties are already proven by numerous studies. In 1996, the aqueous extract of spirulina was reported to prevent reproduction of the AIDS virus in human cells.

Also spirulina was proven to be very helpful during the combined therapy of dysbiosis. In the studies conducted by Japanese scientists spirulina was shown to increase the number of lactobacilli by 327%.

Spirulina platensis is successfully applied worldwide in medical cosmetology for masks, wraps, baths and has a pronounced lifting and skin rejuvenation effect.

Long-term studies in the US have shown that according to the international quality and safety standards spirulina alga is a non-toxic and safe product.

There is another interesting fact: spirulina has a positive effect on the liquid media of a human body. It provides a sort of informational purification and transfers liquid into a new structural condition because, as an alga, it contains information about the original, clean state of water in Nature.

Spirulina and radiation

Nowadays the danger of radiation is caused not only by the existence of nuclear weapons and accidents at nuclear facilities. Small doses of radiation, which influence humanity every day for a long period of time, are no less dangerous. The environment of city dwellers, as well as environmentally aggressive zones affect the health of Earth inhabitants more than ever. Entering our bodies via air, water and off-quality products, radionuclides, nitrogen dioxide, mercury, lead, pesticides and nitrates accumulate in the liver, spleen, thyroid, lymph nodes, bone marrow and tissues. Eventually the internal organs cease to function normally; metabolism becomes compromised, which finally results in serious consequences. However, millions of years ago Mother Nature created a unique organism – Spirulina platensis alga, giving humanity a chance to benefit from its unique properties and age-old wisdom.

It is well established, that spirulina alga contributes to the excretion from the body radionuclide and heavy metals salts. Studies in Japan conducted after the nuclear disaster in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 demonstrated that a daily average intake of 8 grams of spirulina increases five times the amount of excreted uranium, lead and cadmium. Having experienced severe radiation effects, modern Japanese traditionally consume an average of 4 grams of spirulina a day. Virtually the whole nation uses it in their diets.

Japan is known to be one of the countries with the longest life time in the world and, furthermore, this country has the lowest rate of cancer disease and obese people. Experts explain it by a special particular set of "good" foods that are included in the daily ration of Japanese, and probably spirulina holds one of the key positions.

Ukraine also has its own practice in fighting radiation using Spirulina platensis microalga. Cases of beneficial spirulina effect on the health condition of children and adults, strongly affected by radiation due to the Chernobyl Accident, were described in spezialized literature many times. In particular, it was found that the daily intake of 4 to 5 grams of spirulina during six weeks by children facilitates complete functional recovery of their bone marrow and cleanses their bodies from residual radionuclides. The reason is that spirulina contains a substance called poliose that helps to reduce cell radiation damage and stimulates proliferation of bone marrow cells.
