Spirulina Live - is the Spirulina platensis microalga in pure form with no heat treatment, fillers, preservatives or stabilizers.
Spirulina Live is not a BAA or a drug. In fact it is a useful natural product that can be safely consumed at any time and in any amount. Algae are delicacies, recognized by many national cuisines. Spirulina is used both in its natural form and as an ingredient in various dishes, from sorbet to spinach soup.
It was noticed that constant use of spirulina significantly increases digestion intensity, and eating 75% of the usual allowance is enough for a body to get necessary food elements.
Spirulina Live is grown in greenhouses in special pool plantations. It is being packaged and frozen at minus 20°C within 40-60 minutes after collecting and washing. It is shipped and stored frozen, thawed once directly before usage.

Why is Spirulina Live better than the dried one? What are the differences and how important are they?
Since 2009 the ‘Mercury II’ company during the course of a joint research project with the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas (IBSS), National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Sevastopol) have been involved in the cultivation and promotion of live spirulina (Spirulina platensis).
Annually, a strain of spirulina, grown to a necessary volume, undergoes quality and viability control and is shipped from IBSS institution to the city of Kharkov – the main production site. In summer it is placed in phytoreactor (small pool with nutrient solution), where it grows well in greenhouses in broad daylight.
As the spirulina content in biological media reaches a certain concentration, part of suspension (spirulina culture medium) is sieved, medium is drained and the resulting biomass is washed thoroughly with flowing water. Within 40-60 minutes after collecting, spirulina biomass is packaged in food-grade certified package, 42 grams (ml) by package and quickly frozen at about minus 200°C. No other methods of processing or preservation are used. Spirulina Live is delivered to the final consumer in frozen state. Spirulina paste should be thawed once just before use. It doesn’t tolerate refreezing, turning from green paste to a bright purple liquid.
This technology gives live to Spirulina Live, retaining its chemical composition by 100% and reproductive function by 85 - 90%.
Today the ‘Mercury II’ company is the developer and owner of technical specifications for cultivation and preservation of Spirulina platensis microalga in a living form. This technology is unique and not applied anywhere else.
During its existence, the company ‘Mercury II’ has been thoroughly improving its technology. Frozen pasta has been repeatedly tested for reproducibility, safety, time and storage conditions, deliver-ability over long distances without loss of features and quality. Nowadays, spirulina, manufactured by ‘Mercury II’, is available under the “Spirulina- AlgaeLife” and “Spirulina Live” trademark with all the necessary sanitary and approval documents.
In addition, we conducted a marketing research of the consumer market; created a distribution network in Ukraine and Russia. Production of Spirulina platensis started in Israel (Ashkelon suburb). Economical advantages of the product represented on the market have been proven.
Traditionally, live spirulina home or work delivery is available; it can be purchased in wealth food shops and herbalist stores, tasted in cafes, restaurants, fresh bars, fitness clubs, healthcare facilities. The use of spirulina is gaining popularity in beauty salons and centers of alternative medicine.
Sometimes our customers ask a question - what is the difference between Frozen Live Spirulina and its various dry analogues, such as tablets, chips, powders and so on. Really, what’s the point? One jar of our Live Spirulina contains 42 grams of pasta. If we dry it up, we get approximately 5.5 g of dry residue. So why not just buy dry spirulina powder and take 5 grams a day? Does it seem exactly the same, even more handy to store and transport? Certainly it is not. Concerning useful properties, which, in fact, are the reason why we take spirulina, these products are entirely different. It should be noted that any preservation method, including drying, increases the shelf life of ANY product, but reduces its consumer properties. Or almost completely destroys them.
Let’s take an example with fruit. Think, for instance, of an apple. You don't have to be a biochemist to understand that fresh apple is clearly healthier than a dried one. We all intuitively understand it. The same goes for spriulina and microalgae in general. Let’s analyze processes that affect the quality during spirulina drying.
All useful components of spirulina are composed of proteins. During even the most gentle drying, spirulina is exposed to two main factors – temperature and contact with oxygen– the oxidation. Both of these factors have an adverse impact on the protein molecules, which contain all valuable items of spirulina.
It is enough to realize that even a simple keeping of fresh raw spirulina on open air for one hour results in a complete protein oxidation and spirulina turns into a spoiled wasted product. And what if, during this air-exposed storage, it was also treated with hot air or, which is common, open fire? Surely, this treatment just kills life in the molecule forever.
When you purchase a dried spirulina, you never know what temperature it was dried at, how fresh the raw material was. Drying allows manufacturing 100% of raw material into powder, including wasted oxidized protein, with no refuse.
Let’s have a look at the minimum numbers of losses of only a few major spirulina substances during drying, identified by the laboratory studies carried out by the Department of Biotechnologies and Phytoresources of Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas, Academy of Sciences of Ukraine:
It is essential that the reduction of pigments (chlorophyll, carotenoids, phycocyanin) is a common index of spirulina biological activity loss during drying. According to the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas, Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the total dehydration (water extraction from cells) loss of biological activity may reach 60-70% and more. That is a sort of a scientific ground of the processes. In lay terms, nobody would compare a picked fresh apple, a pear or a plum with dried fruit or compote. Canned juice will never compete with fresh.
The most striking and clear illustration of how Spirulina Live differs from its dried competitors, is the conservation of reproductive ability (multiplication) of spirulina cells after thawing. In other words, taking our spirulina and placing it in the appropriate favorable environment, one can grow a new generation of microalgae. It’s hardly possible to grow something from a powder, dried or overdried at high temperatures.
Thus, the biological activity of frozen spirulina is conserved at the level of live product, and this technology is so far the only method for transporting the live weight from manufacturer to a consumer.
Problems of storage and transportation of Spirulina Live are not the product’s cons, but pros. At that, the customer still gets a really useful product with incomparable properties, not spoiled by human attempts to ‘improve’ it and facilitate its shipment and storage.
Today the business dictates the upgrade of efficiency whatever it takes.
Each manufacturer faces a dilemma to choose between commercial efficiency and utility.
That's why thousands of tons of stabilizers and preservatives are hidden in foods and beverages. Thus, it is easier to manufacture, store, ship and sell. That is why hundreds of manufacturers offer spirulina powder, competing in marketing ploys, packaging and prices.
However, we have made our choice. We do not want to develop manufacturing and sales of the product wherein 70 -100% of the nutrients are burned, or which cannot be spoilt because in fact 10% of its weight are conserving agents, slowly killing the consumer.

Comparison and analysis of world literature and the results of our studies suggest that the blue-green Spirulina platensis alga is formed of a large set of biologically active components, justifying its application as a food and medicine.
Spirulina attracts attention of physicians primarily as a source of protein, which forms 50% -70% of Spirulina. Moreover, Spirulina includes a large amount of essential amino acids that are not synthesized in body, vitamins and minerals. A great advantage of Spirulina is low percentage of fat in it - total lipids form not more than 5%, cholesterol forms just about 0.013%. Therefore, Spirulina is widely used in many countries as an environmentally friendly product of a healthy diet and a nutritional supplement in order to enrich ration with proteins and vitamins. It is taken in its natural form and is used in the preparation of various dishes as a supplement. Adding Spirulina to the diet normalizes metabolism, stabilizes body weight, and improves the viability of the organism, its resilience, mental and physical performance.
It is quite essential to mention the stabilizing effect of Spirulina on the intestinal microflora, especially growth of lactic acid bacteria, which determines its use in enteropathy treatment. It is important that the complex studies of general and special types of toxicity (allergenic effect, immunotoxicity, teratogenicity, embryotoxicity, carcinogenicity) proved complete safety of Spirulina. This fact is also justified by vast experience of its use in food and as a supplement.
Spirulina is a natural substance, the metabolism of its main components (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals) is carried out the same way as all other nutrients in human’s body, which eliminates the possibility of dangerous overdoses. All of the above proves the therapeutic efficiency of spirulina during the treatment of various diseases that was proved by clinical experience of Spirulina in:
- treatment of chronic diseases of the cardiovascular system (atherosclerosis, cardiosclerosis, ischemic heart disease)
- central nervous system (cerebral cardiosclerosis, dementia, manic-depression, alcoholism)

A wide range of biologically active components determines the viability of use of Spirulina in complex therapy of many diseases. On the other hand, it makes it difficult to insert in body a sufficient amount of the individual ingredients, the pharmacological effects of which determine their therapeutic properties in the treatment of a particular disease. Therefore, it seems justified to conduct research in the direction of discharging from Spirulina of individual components that have pharmacological activity, in order to create effective drugs. Development of domestic production of Spirulina, creation of new biotechnological systems for practicing the biosynthesis of Spirulina, implementation of efficient technologies of discharge from Spirulina bioactive components is a prerequisite for providing Ukraine with Spirulina as a valuable source of protein, vitamins, amino acids, as well as raw materials for the manufacture of highly effective medicines.

The simplest thing you can do with frozen live spirulina is to mix it with any lukewarm liquid (water, packaged juice, fresh juice, fruit or vegetable puree, fruit drink, kefir, ice tea). At that, spirulina should first be thawed or just blended without thawing.
